Biweekly Recap #2
It’s that time of the month again! Welcome back to the SWW Sports Report, second edition. Girls volleyball and both soccer teams were back in action these past two weeks, representing Walls on the court and the field.
Girls soccer added a tally to the win column with a Mckinley Tech forfeit, but suffered a heartbreaking loss September 14 at Jackson-Reed. Sophomore Nadia Lytle broke the late 0-0 stalemate with a strong finish off of a corner, but the Penguins surrendered 2 late goals, falling to the Tigers 1-2. In the loss, Walls showed heart and proved they could stick with the top team in the league. They managed to keep the intensity up even in a mostly stagnant game, and fought until the last minute. Jackson-Reed will have their hands full when the two meet in the championship. The Penguins followed up their disappointment with an 11-1 steamrolling of Benjamin Banneker. In the rout, starting goalie Erin Pollack followed up a first half clean sheet with a goal of her own in the second half. The girls now stand at 3-2-1 as the playoff push begins.
Boys soccer had a similar week to the girls. The Penguins got off to a strong start at Calvin Coolidge, winning 3-0. After junior attacker Wilmer Reyes-Ceballo found the net to put Walls on the board, underclassmen finished the job. Sophomores Graham McMorris and Ereftu “senior” Patel added a goal each, burying the Colts. The Penguins next match took them to Jackson-Reed, where they fell 2-4. The Tigers came out of the gate roaring, putting two in the back of the net before 5 minutes had passed. Junior Jack Meltzer responded with a beautiful sideline maneuver leading to a tap-in goal from Eastern freshman Lucas Campbell, closing the gap to 1. Despite a second-half clean sheet from goalie Van Harllee, the Penguins could not overcome the deficit. Regardless of the score, Walls was able to net 2 against one of the strongest back lines in the city, showing improved chemistry among the young attacking group. The boys took care of Banneker in their next match, winning 3-1 and bringing their record on the season to 3-3-0.
It was straight business for volleyball, cruising to three straight-set wins over DCIAA opponents. The Penguins’ first victims were the Ballou Knights. The girls wiped the floor, winning their sets 25-7 and 25-10. They continued their dominance against the Coolidge Colts, taking the first set 25-4 and the second 25-13. Business continued at McKinley Tech, where the Penguins put away the Trainers in back-to-back 25-10 sets The girls remained undefeated against DCIAA opponents, the only blemishes on their record coming from a tight loss at WCAC opponent Archbishop Carroll and a competitive showing against a good Sidwell team. The squad stands at 4-2 on the year as the season heats up.
Our athletes continued to make Walls proud in the past 2 weeks, with a plethora of victories and incredible moments. Stay tuned for more SWW sports content.
